Bonefishing in Turks & Caicos

Sunshine-filled activities abound on Grace Bay, and there is one unique Providenciales experience you cannot miss. Bonefishing, considered the ultimate fly fishing, proves an exciting excursion for adventurers, families, and sightseers of all skill levels. What is bonefishing? Fly fishing for bonefish is a popular sport in South Florida, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. This activity is considered a challenge since these wily bonefish swim at speeds up to 25 mph and make for an exhilarating time as you reel them in. Wade in shallow waters or reel them in from the boat. Since bonefishing is mostly done for sport, these fighting fish are usually thrown back. Provo’s bonefishing experts The Somerset’s guests love going on fishing outings in the “big fish mecca” of Turks & Caicos with Bonefish Unlimited, which has been based out of Providenciales for more than 35 years. Managing Director Urmas Catches 700lb Marlin

August 28 started as another typical sun-drenched Sunday morning in Providenciales for Managing Director Urmas Kärner and his daughter Aleksa, but ended with treasured times that will go down in Grace Bay history. Catch of the Day The father-daughter duo set off on the charter fishing vessel named “No Worries,” an appropriate name for their day of carefree Grace Bay fun. After two hours of trolling in the deep blue waters, Urmas and Aleksa each had landed a tuna (pictured right). This later made for a memorable evening meal at Pavilion, where our resort’s Executive Chef Brad Townsend prepared their fresh fish to perfection. The One that Got Away After a lull in the action, Urmas announced he was donning his “lucky hat.” Just a few minutes later, he hooked into a fish that required three men to take turns in the fighting chair and struggle with the enormous sea creature….

Jo Jo, Grace Bay’s Friendly Dolphin

Turks & Caicos is home to one of the world’s most famous dolphins, and many guests at The Somerset make it their mission to spot our friendly aquatic resident, Jo Jo. This Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin has been swimming the seas of Grace Bay since 1980s and is known for his personable demeanor. From splashing, swimming or jumping, Jo Jo loves showing off in his natural habitat. While this marine mammal loves to make an exhibition, it must be remembered he is still a wild animal and cannot be touched. The Turks & Caicos government places a strong focus on preserving our islands’ marine life, and Jo Jo is a symbol of this. Photo courtesy of Stuart Lockyer Did you encounter Jo Jo during your stay?
