1. Check out a conch farm
Meet Sally and Jerry, the resident wild conchs of Provo. Where do they live? Why, on the one and only conch farm in the world, just a hop, skip and a jump down the Leeward Highway from the Somerset. Conchworld specializes in raising Caribbean Queen conchs for export – the shells are prized, and conchs are quite tasty, although Sally and Jerry actually seem to enjoy interacting with their trainers and visitors to the farm.
At the farm, watch how conch are raised, handle lustrous conch pearls and even purchase fresh conch for a tasty conch salad. Tour the offshore pasture, filled with circular pens to rear the conch until they are harvested. 2. Burn off energy at the Children’s Park
An excellent Children’s Park is located located on Lower Bight Road in Providenciales, featuring slides, swings and other obstacles to help kids burn off energy. There’s also plenty of shade and spots to sit down, and a place nearby to purchase something cold to drink.
The real attraction in the neighborhood, though, is the The National Environmental Centre (NEC) located quite close to the Children’s Park along Lower Bight Road. The NEC opened April, 2007, and does a great job natural habitats and ecosystems of the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are also special exhibits that explain sharks, snakes and other creatures of interest to the younger set.Learn more here.
3. Take a walk along the shores of Chalk Sound
The western half of Provo is a great place to catch a glimpse of unspoiled Caribbean habitat; this half of the island is also home to the Provo’s most stunning natural attraction, Chalk Sound National Park.
Chalk Sound runs along 5km of coast a few miles southwest of downtown Providenciales, and features sublimely beautiful shades of turquoise water, as well as a vista of countless tiny islets. Provided you can manage the logistics, it’s a great place to take the family sea kayaking.
Also on the western part of the island is Northwest Point Marine National Park, which extends to nearby reefs and several saline lakes that attract breeding and migrant waterfowl. You’ll have to hike to get there. Learn more here.
4. Get in tune with your inner equestrian
